LEEP Dual Language Academy Charter School to Close Starting March 16

Distance Learning Starts Thursday, March 19

UPDATE March 17: Following the guidance of local health authorities, LEEP Academy will remain closed through at least April 20, 2020. Distance learning resources are available now.

After careful consideration, LEEP Dual Language Academy Charter School has decided to cancel all in-person classes and after-school programs for the week of March 16-20. On Thursday, March 19, the school will shift to a distance learning protocol using a combination of homework packets and online tools.  

Also on March 19, we will announce our plan for the following week(s): a re-opening OR a continued closure. Parent-teacher conferences scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 will still be conducted as scheduled, but via telephone.

Again, there will be no classes held at LEEP Academy starting Monday, March 16 through at least Friday, March 20. (Monday was previously scheduled to be an early dismissal day).

LEEP Academy does not take this decision lightly. We know that a school closure represents a serious disruption for many of our families, and it has always been our belief that "every minute counts" when it comes to students' academic progress. Parents should know that we have no reported instances of COVID-19 in the LEEP Academy school community, nor do we believe that our school facility has been compromised in any way. Our school has been following all state and local protocols from the first announcement of the pandemic.

Nevertheless, the safety of our families and neighbors—and particularly our elders--compels us take this extraordinary step in the interest of slowing the spread of the virus. We know that our families come from all over Brooklyn riding subways and buses, and there are grandparents and other adults in many households.

LEEP Academy will continue to gather information, weigh expert guidance, and communicate with students and families, about this quickly evolving situation. Our families and our community come first.

Academics
No in-person classes will be held starting Monday, March 16.

Monday through Wednesday, teachers will be communicating with families and preparing for distance learning.

Starting Thursday, March 19, distance learning will begin. It is vital that we work together to keep students learning and engaged, with as much of an orderly schedule as possible. Understanding that different families have different schedules and technological resources, we are planning learning activities to be flexible. 

Afterschool
Since school will be closed, there will be no afterschool music, art, SocceRoof, or Roads to Success during the week of March 16-20. Payments already made for these extra services will be credited toward future classes.

School Food
We know that many families depend our food services to provide nourishment for children, and we are coordinating with NYC SchoolFood. Grab-and-go meals for families to pick up at the school starting Monday, March 16 at 8am (breakfast) and 11am (lunch). More details will be shared soon. UPDATE 3.16: Meals will *not* be available at LEEP Academy but can be picked up at P.S. 94 from 7:30am-1:30pm for the week of March 16 only.

Bus Service
Because the school will be closed, school bus routes will not run during the week of March 16-20.

School Facility
The LEEP Academy building will be open, on a limited basis, ONLY for school administrative and support staff. The school can still be reached at info@leepschools.org and 917-819-LEEP (5337).

Enrollment
LEEP Academy is still accepting applications for enrollment in 2020-21 (grades K, 1, and 2), online at www.LEEPacademies.org. At this time there is no change to the date of our enrollment lottery on April 6. Please call 917-819-LEEP (5337) for more information.
